Why I don't (always) wear white!

Kundalini Yoga teachers are easy to identify. They will be the ones dressed head to toe in white, usually wearing a head covering of some kinds.

When I first started my training I went all in, everyone was wearing the same so it fostered the feeling of community everytime we all got together.

Yogi Bhajan who first created this idea of wearing white said it was for the following reasons:

• it is a combination of all the colours and as chakras are often represented by different colours this can help keep them balanced

•enhances your aura, this is our protective shield from negative energies that may come our way

•it reflects people's energy back to themselves, so during a yoga class as you are hoping creating positive energy in your students it is projected back onto them

•it fosters a sense of self reflection in the wearer

As I began teaching however I chose to leave this part of the 'tradition' behind, while I may still wear a white top or wrap I chose to lose the full garb. I realised that to many this maybe intimidating, Kundalini Yoga is a powerful and transformative practice that is too easily dismissed as 'out there'.

I really hope through my classes to make Kundalini Yoga more accessible, to lose some of the 'woo' factor and focus on the wisdom and experience.

I want to be fully present in class to hold space for students, not worrying about clothes (or how see through they are).

Fundamentally, it is the practice that counts. Your mindset and willingness to participate is what students need to bring to class, the rest is just window dressing.
